Before we dive into a topic that I’m sure will resonate with anyone who invests the time to read this message and the few that follow, I have no choice but to share an update about the 2020 LIVE2LEAD:Harrisonburg SEASON!!! In addition to the in-person, Executive Summit format event we’ll be hosting at Blue Ridge Community College on Friday, October 23, we’ve added a LIVE virtual option on October 9 and a second virtual option on November 13. While the Oct 23 date is technically sold out until we can work with all of our partners and those who registered prior to COVID shutting down the world, both virtual options are available now at www.L2L-Harrisonburg.com along with some new info on speakers and other details about the special opportunities we can offer you and your team from Oct 9 through the end of Feb ‘21!

Now let’s get down to business!

I recently published an article on LinkedIn titled Busy, Lazy, or Undisciplined? At first glance, that title will likely step on some toes, but believe it or not, that wasn’t my goal - this time...

If you’re living in the same reality I am, you and nearly every other responsible person you know has more to do in what continuously seems like less time to do it. And God forbid we attempt to advance in our careers… That just adds to the mountain of to-do items we absolutely have to get checked off our lists every single day! That doesn’t even touch on the issue of being tied to our mobile devices at all times and feeling the pressure of responding to every ding and ping that comes our way.

But that’s just part of it, right?

While I keep my schedule as full as anyone I know, too full if you ask my darling bride, I’ll be the first to say that simply staying busy doesn’t necessarily equate to getting results! Just over a year ago, Cindy and I build a three-part lesson in our Leading At The Next Level program, then tailored those lessons for a client’s leadership team serving all of Virginia, based on some things we learned from Dan Pink in his book WHEN: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing and from John Maxwell in his book Leadership Gold. Those three lessons (and half-day workshop) really dug into ways each of us can begin to understand how we’re individually wired and build our schedules to achieve the results we’re expected to on a daily basis.

The feedback we’ve received from that has been overwhelmingly positive but after hearing a friend recently reference a statement from Tim Ferris’s book, The 4-Hour Workweek, “being perpetually busy is akin to being sloppy with your time and is ultimately a form of laziness,” I realized that I needed to circle back to add one more piece. And that piece is all about developing the discipline to exercise complete control, or at least to the highest degree possible within our responsibility, of what we allow to occupy our time.

Before I go on, let me emphasize that I’m not suggesting being a jerk or shirking responsibility. I am, however, going to be a little bit tough over the next few days regarding what we’re willing to give our lives (time) to. Make no mistake, this is for me as much as anyone else who ever reads it! And as leaders, I’m making the assumption that you’re willing to take a tough look at things from time to time in order to grow to that next level…

In the next message, we’ll hash out the kind of discipline I’m talking about here. Until then, be sure to take a look at all the options you have for joining us for the Sixth Annual LIVE2LEAD:Harrisonburg event regardless of where you live!!!
